What is Freemasonry

What is Freemasonry?

As we travel and learn through the different Masonic levels, and start reading some of the most fascinating Masonic books and interact with some of our brothers at different levels- we may realize important discoveries. It is at that point that we start realizing that Masonry is full of mystified and fascinated: history, science, arts, occultism, esoteric phenomena and a whole treasure of wisdom. Wisdom that we do not acquire but rather inherit slowly throughout our Masonic journey. And that wisdom is what makes up the most relevant legacy of silent masters. So, who are silent masters?. In the next paragraphs we will make a sense of some of  the relevant human perceptions by traveling a little bit in history to answer this question.

When we speak of Kabbalah or what we know today is traditionally traced back to Adam and Eve, and it is very well connected to numerology in different ways. The same numerology patterns we as masons consciously or unconsciously follow through rituals, traditions and way of acting in our lives. Kabbalah has been maintained in its purest forms by unbroken traditions of known and mostly unknown masters, saints, prophets, and also Masons over thousands of years. The practices of the Mystical Kabbalah are literally passed down from teacher to student; from master to apprentice and generally involve a variety of yogic disciplines that are rooted in scriptural revelations. We can probably find correlations – mystical correlations of Kabbalah with all other mystical traditions whether religious or simply spiritual. Also, each mystical tradition has its own unique totality archetypes, scriptures, Messiahs and great souls, and styles of observances.

Ever since becoming a Freemason, I have been nagged by my conscious for the meaning of Masonry. Not happy with the parroted answer, “Freemasonry is a beautiful system of morals, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols”. I wanted to know why I had joined and what’s Masonries place in society.

Yes indeed, If Freemasonry is the answer, What is the Question?

  • What was I seeking?
  • Communal Identity?
  • An ends beyond myself?
  • Will I every find ultimate reality?
  • Will I find out how my mind works?
  • Is not this reflection into the meaning of life, of life’s value, a theology without a God?

I have faith but yearn for the understanding.

Yes it is a system of morals, yes we use symbols and yes the metaphors, mythologies (stories that teach), and allegories keep use lost in the maze of our minds.

Within us is the soul of the whole; the wise silence; the universal beauty, to which every part and particle is equally related; the eternal One.

WHEN IT BREAKS THROUGH OUR INTELLECT, IT IS GENIUS; WHEN IT BREATHES THROUGH OUR WILL, IT IS VIRTUE; WHEN IT FLOWS THROUGH OUR AFFECTIONS, IT IS LOVE.

A quote from our illustruos brother: George Washington.

Being persuaded that a just application of the principles, on which the Masonic Fraternity is founded, must be promote of private virtue and public prosperity, I shall always be happy to advance the interests of the Society, and to be considered by them as a deserving brother. – GEORGE WASHINGTON
